The number of people newly introduced to smoking is as high as those already in the practice of smoking. In other words, for each smoker in Canada there is a new person becoming addicted to smoking in Canada. The conventional smokers are also termed as prevalence smokers. Recently the percentage of prevalence smokers is on a decrease. The reports presented by Canadian Tobacco Use Monitoring Survey in the initial phase of the year 2008 had shown the possibility of this figure lowering to around 18%. The clear note that each of the reports have been reiterating is Quit smoking!

The biggest reason for the Canadian folks to quit smoking cigarettes lies in the fact that smoking is the leading reason behind deaths in Canada! Smoking kills! It not only causes umpteen diseases as dangerous as lung cancer, cancers of the mouth, throat and esophagus, but also causes deaths. Smoking, it kills Canadians.

British Columbia records the lowest rate of conventional smokers across the Canada, with that figure being 15%. Saskatchewan is condemned for a percentage of prevalence smokers as high as 21%. The Canadian demography that suffers the maximum risk is between the age group of 15 to 24 years. Our teenagers and young adults are still taking up the bad habit of smoking.

As per that report, 15% of the age group between 15 and 19 identify themselves as smokers. Ever since Canada has been keeping records of the smoking habits and trends, this percentage can definitely be considered as the lowest. 28% of the demography varying between 20 to 24 years practice smoking. The male population of the segment smoke at a higher rate compared to the female counterpart. After crossing 30, people tend to realize the dangers associated with smoking – people start to feel mortal and realize that diseases caused by smoking will catch up with them soon if they do not quit smoking. Despite repeated awareness messages and warnings against smoking, we seldom realize the intensity of danger associated with smoking. If you look at the reports published by CTUMS, the statistics highlighting the smoking habits of the Canadians would leave you appalled!

As per these reports, way back in 1985, around 35 percent of the Canadian population consisted of prevalence smokers, whereas this figure alleviated to 20 percent in the year 2007. As per the records obtained during the initial phase of 2008, CTUMS has confirmed that the percentage of Canadians who smoke declined towards 18 percent.

The Province of British Columbia, accredited for the lowest share of prevalence smokers across the entire country, still has 15 percent of its population who smokes. With the national average being 18 percent, the province recorded to have the highest percentage of prevalence smokers is Saskatchewan with 21 percent as its statistical figure. The smoking record of Canada can be fragmented into age wise categories for a better understanding. Broadly three age categories of smokers can be made. The first one deals with people 15 to 20 years of age. Canadians of this age group bear major risk due to active smoking practices. 15 percent of the Canadian population belonging to this age group call themselves smokers. The second category consists of the age group between 20 and 24 years. Out of this population, 28 percent smoke actively. The third category is made up of Canadians aging between 30 and 50. This segment of people is quitting smoking at the highest rate.

Now that you have a fair idea of the smoking population in Canada, you must be aware of the fact that smoking is the biggest reason for deaths in Canada! Smoking kills!
